Keep in mind:

  • But first of all and most importantly, do not close the Word programm and don't shut down your computer while you are still trying to restore your lost document.

Step by step:

  1. You can use special recovery software that you can download on the internet.
  2. You can open your "temp" folder and search through the files that match the date and time when you worked on your document. If you do not find the folder (sometimes it is hidden), you can as well search your computer for files with the ending ".tmp"
  3. If there is no possibility to restore the document with the given advice and it was a very important file, you can still give your hard disk to a company that is specialised on resorting lost data. This is usually the last option, since it is very expensive.
  4. To prevent this in the future it is very useful to use the Word feature to save different versions of your document every time you work on it.
  5. This can easily be done by selecting "File", then "Versions" and activate "Automatically save version on close".
  6. If you then want to open an older version of your document or when you have accidentally deleted or overwritten it, you can restore the latest version by selecting one of the versions Word has saved for you.
